Lesson 2/Learning Event 2
LEARNING EVENT 2:
ESTABLISH A PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE PLAN
Organizational preventive maintenance is the systematic care, inspection, and servicing of
equipment to maintain it in serviceable condition, prevent breakdowns, and insure maximum
operational capability. Preventive maintenance is the responsibility of all categories of
maintenance concerned with the equipment and includes the inspection, testing, and repair or
replacement of parts that inspection and tests indicate would probably fail before the next
scheduled periodic service.
The unit commander is responsible for the proper operation and maintenance of organizational
equipment In turn, the commander will hold individual users, operators, and supervisory
personnel responsible for the proper operation, care, and maintenance of organizational
equipment in accordance with procedures outlined in technical manuals covering the specific
equipment Part of your responsibility as the unit NBC officer or NCO will be to insure that
preventive maintenance on NBC equipment is scheduled and performed at the proper intervals
and in the proper manner. Maintenance personnel use DD Form 314 and an equipment status
chart to facilitate scheduling of maintenance for NBC equipment.
DD Form 314
The DD Form 314 is used to record scheduled and performed organizational maintenance and
services. It is also used to record nonavailable time. It provides a record of daily availability of
applicable equipment One DD Form 314 may be initiated for each item of equipment Several
like items may be scheduled on one DD Form 314 if they are scheduled for service on a common
date. When several like items are scheduled on one DD Form 314, each item must be identified
by serial number in the "Remarks" section of the form or on an attached sheet If the item has no
serial number, the unit number is entered. The front side of DD Form 314 will be used for
scheduling periodic maintenance services and the reverse side (or another DD Form 314) will be
used for recording nonavailable time.
Scheduling. Services will be scheduled at least one month or one service in advance, whichever
time is greater. For scheduling purposes, one month to the corresponding date in the following
