LEARNING EVENT 1:
ESTABLISH PROCEDURES FOR
ASSIGNING RESPONSIBILITY FOR
USE AND MAINTENANCE OF NBC EQUIPMENT
In order to be an effective fighting organization in an NBC environment, the unit must depend, in
part, on the proper organization and assignment of NBC equipment and supplies. These items
are assigned, as appropriate, to NBC defense teams or to individuals for use, security, and
maintenance.
The NBC equipment which your unit has on hand will depend upon the type of unit to which you
are assigned. You can find the equipment which your unit is authorized to have by referring to
the authorization documents (MTOE, CTA, TDA) applicable to your unit.
You will be tasked with providing input on the proper distribution of the unit NBC equipment
and supplies. These materials, depending on their intended use, will be issued to individuals or
sections or squads. They can also be issued to NBC defense teams. Unit NBC defense teams are
personnel assigned by the unit commander to perform a specific function in unit NBC defense.
Teams which are usually appointed are the --
NBC Defense Control Team.
NBC Defense Radiological Monitoring and Survey Team.
NBC Defense Chemical Detection Team.
NBC Defense Decontamination Team.
A logical assignment and distribution scheme is to issue the unit NBC equipment to the
individual, section, or team which uses it. Other factors can enter the decision and the unit
commander or other local commanders may specify other issue procedures.
Your recommendation of the distribution scheme for the NBC equipment and supplies in your
unit will depend upon the commander's directions and the unit SOP. Some typical distributions
of various NBC items are described in the following paragraphs.
Protective Masks
The protective mask is perhaps the most important item of NBC equipment available to unit
personnel. One protective mask (M17, M24, or M25-series) is authorized for each soldier. The
protective masks in the unit can be issued to the individuals, kept in a central location, or they
can be issued to each section of the unit.
