Smoke support of defensive operations. The preparation of concealed, well-built defensive
positions and obstacles is crucial to the success of a defense. The smoke unit can support the
preparation of the defense by providing concealment of friendly forces while they are constructing their
defensive positions and obstacles; it can also conceal major supply routes used to bring supplies and
equipment forward. Smoke support of the defense is normally accomplished by stationary smoke
a. As enemy forces approach, smoke can force enemy echelons to deploy prematurely into
assault formations, slow their advance, disrupt their command and control, and make them more
susceptible to friendly fire. Smoke projected into enemy echelons may separate the advance guard from
the main force and may separate units within the main force. This separation denies the enemy the
ability to concentrate a mass of firepower, and it may enable friendly forces to attrit the enemy. Figures
1-22 and 1-23 illustrate an example of the use of smoke support in the preparation for and execution of
the defense.
