b. Once contact has been made with the enemy, the maneuver force may assemble into assault
formation for hasty or deliberate attacks against enemy defensive positions or to exploit enemy
weaknesses. The smoke unit can support this phase of the operation by producing hasty smoke screens
to cover the maneuver force as it deploys, denying the enemy the opportunity for sustained engagement
with long-range weapon systems. If winds and weather conditions are favorable, the smoke unit may
also provide obscuring smoke against the enemy positions while the maneuver force assaults those
positions (Figure 1-18). The smoke unit may also provide smoke to support reconsolidation of the
maneuver force once the enemy positions have been taken.
