c. The smoke plan for the assault must cover the enemy defensive positions to be assaulted as
well as cover probable enemy overwatching positions. Obscuring the enemy overwatch positions
degrades the enemy forward observers from acquiring and calling indirect fire on the maneuver force. It
may also defeat the optic sights used by enemy ATGMs. The success of the offensive operation may
dictate that the maneuver force support elements move forward also as the entire force moves on the
offense. Smoke units may support this movement of support elements by concealing them as they
prepare to move, by concealing road intersections and bridges along the maneuver route, and by
concealing the support elements as they establish their new location. Figure 1-19 illustrates a smoke
unit concealing a maneuver force support element area.
