GENERATOR SYSTEM

Mobile chemical smoke generator units are normally employed to conceal troops, equipment,
operations, and installations and to deceive the enemy through the use of smoke. These units may
employ either mobile or stationary smoke generators to provide smoke for large-area smoke screens,
small-area smoke screens, or deceptive smoke screens.

The M1059 Smoke Generator System supports mechanized and armor units. The M157/M998
Smoke Generator System supports motorized, dismounted, and rear-area units. Discussion of the uses
of both systems follows.
a. M1059 Mechanized Smoke System. The M1059, with its crew protection against small arms
fire and artillery shrapnel offered by the M113A2 APC, has the capability to operate and maneuver in
and around the main battle area while providing smoke
