support. This capability allows the M1059 to produce smoke screens more quickly and sustain the
smoke with less impact from changing winds. The M1059 also has the flexibility of adjusting the size
of the smoke screen by changing its maneuver patterns. The M1059 may also be used in a stationary
mode to produce smoke screens.
The M1059 is fielded in two types of chemical units. The first type, the mechanized smoke platoon,
chemical company (heavy division), consists of six 1059s and supports heavy divisions. The second
type, the mechanized smoke company, consists of 21 M1059s and is assigned at corps level. Discussion

To conceal troop and vehicle assembly areas.
To conceal vehicle movements (including attacks and withdrawals).
To conceal roads and bridges along maneuver routes.
To screen maneuver element flanks.
To conceal construction of battle positions.
To restrict enemy movement and/or force enemy deployment from convoy formations
(2) Small-Area Smoke Screens. The M1059 can provide small-area smoke screens --
