b. Starting Procedures. Follow these procedures (Figure 3-6) for starting the M157 Smoke
Generator System when external temperatures exceed 90 F or the smoke temperature indicator is above
650 F.
Step 1.
Turn on the vehicle engine.
Step 2.
Set circuit breaker CB1 (1) to the ON position.
Step 3.
Set the power switch (2) to the ON position. The power indicator will light.
WARNING
Do not hold the fuel, engine, or fog oil switch in the START position for
more than 30 seconds or equipment will be damaged.
Step 4.
Hold the fuel switch (3) in the START position until the indicator lights (but no
longer than 30 seconds). Release the fuel switch and allow it to move to the RUN
position.
Step 5.
Wait for the air indicator to light. Depress the purge button (4), hold it for three
seconds, and then release it.
Step 6.
Preset the fog oil flow control knob (5) for normal operating temperature and
maximum smoke production. If the proper setting is unknown, set the knob to 5.
Step 7.
Simultaneously hold the engine switch (6) and the fog oil switch (7) to the
START position (but no longer than 30 seconds).
Step 8.
When both the engine and fog oil indicators light, simultaneously release the
engine and fog oil switches and allow them to move to the RUN position.
Step 9.
Adjust the fog oil flow control knob (5) for normal operating temperature and
maximum smoke output if the knob was set on 5 in step 6.
