PART E -- PERFORM OPERATOR-LEVEL TROUBLESHOOTING
PROCEDURES WHEN THE ENGINE RUNS ERRATICALLY
This part discusses operator troubleshooting procedures when the smoke generator engine runs
erratically. Follow these procedures to correct the malfunction.
Step 1.
Set all switches and circuit breaker CB1 to the OFF position.
Step 2.
Inspect the engine head assembly.
WARNING
Cold air entering a hot engine chamber may cause fire flashback and
injury to personnel. Purge hot gases from the engine before removing the
engine head assembly. Immediately install a spare engine head assembly.
WARNING
The engine and the engine head may become very hot during operation.
Do not touch the engine or the engine head with your bare hands.
a. Remove the engine head assembly. (Refer to Figure 2-1 on page 2-3.) Immediately install a
serviceable, spare engine head assembly.
b. Restart the smoke generator.
(1) If the generator runs smoothly, the engine head was faulty. Continue with the smoke
mission. Repair the engine head as soon as possible.
(2) If the generator still runs erratically, shut down the generator and notify organizational
maintenance. Inspect the engine head that was removed and repair it as necessary.
