PART A -- PERFORM OPERATOR MAINTENANCE
The smoke generator operator must perform operator maintenance on the two M54 Smoke Generators.
This maintenance includes the nozzle assembly, the engine head assembly, the cover assembly, and the
frame assembly.
1.
Nozzle Assembly.
a. To service the nozzle assembly, first remove it by following these procedures:
Step 1.
If servicing the M1059, drop the protective armor plate. This step is not required
for the M157/M998.
Step 2.
Loosen the clamp nut on the nozzle clamp (Figure 2-1) with a socket wrench, lift
the catch, and remove the clamp.
Step 3.
Remove the nozzle assembly from the engine head.
b. Follow these procedures to service the nozzle assembly:
Step 1.
Check the nozzle screen for cleanliness. If the screen is dirty, clean it with dry
cleaning solvent and a small brush.
Step 2.
Check the air and fuel line connections for tightness. If connections are loose,
tighten them using an appropriate wrench.
Step 3.
Clean the interior of the nozzle cone with a clean, dry rag.
2.
Engine Head Assembly.
a. Servicing of the engine head assembly requires its removal and disassembly first. After
servicing the engine head assembly, the operator must reassemble it and install it and the nozzle
assembly. Remove the engine head by following these procedures:
Step 1.
Position the engine head wrench on the engine head (Figure 2-1). Loosen the
engine head by turning the wrench counterclockwise.
