Before-operation Checks. Either before or after refueling, perform before-operation checks on
the M157 Smoke Generator System. For the M54 Smoke Generator, inspect the nozzle assembly,
engine head assembly, frame assembly, the hoses, and the cables.
a. Nozzle Assembly. (Refer to Figure 1-3 on page 1-4.) Check the nozzle assembly for
cleanliness and ensure all screws and connections are tight. Clean as required.
b. Engine Head Assembly. (Refer to Figure 2-1 on page 2-2 and Figure 2-2 on page 2-4.)
Inspect the engine head for damaged parts. Disassemble, clean, and reassemble all four engine head
assemblies. Mount one engine head in each M54 Generator; the remaining two engine heads are spares.
c. Frame Assembly. (Refer to Figure 1-9 on page 1-9.) Drain waste oil from the drip pan.
d. Hoses and Cables. Ensure all hose and cable assemblies are connected tightly. Check hoses
and cables for tears, leaks, and dry rot.
e. Fog Oil Tank Assembly. (Refer to Figure 2-3 on page 2-8.) Check the sight glasses for
cracks and leaks. Refuel the tank as required.
f. Fog Oil Pump Assembly. (Refer to Figure 2-4 on page 2-9.) Check the hoses and the cables
for tears, leaks, and dry rot. Remove, clean, and reinstall the strainers.
g. Air Compressor Assembly. (Refer to Figure 2-5 on page 2-11 and Figure 2-6 on page 2-12.)

h. Control Panel Assembly. (Refer to Figure 2-7 on page 2-14.) Turn on the vehicle engine.
Set circuit breaker CB1 and the power switches to the ON position. Check the indicator and panel
lights. Check the fire test switch. Set the power and circuit breaker CB1 switches to the OFF position.
Turn off the vehicle engine.
i. Fire Extinguishers. Check each fire extinguisher (Figure 3-1) for a broken seal (1) and the
red indicator stem (2) inside the cap (3). Notify organizational maintenance if either the seal is broken
or the red indicator stem has popped up.
j. Tools. Check to ensure all required tools (Figure 3-2) are present and serviceable. Required
tools for the M157 Smoke Generator Set consist of one each of the following.
