During-operation Checks
Monitor the rate at which you are using fog oil. During operation, if the generator stops producing
smoke, the first thing you should check is the fog oil supply. Change engine heads when engine
performance drops.
Check for fuel and oil leaks. Adjust the flow of fuel and fog oil as required. Listen for high- and
low-speed engine noises and check for overheating. Additional steps to perform for during-operation
checks are found in Figure 18 starting on page 45.

IDENTIFY SHUTDOWN PROCEDURES AND PERFORM AFTER-OPERATION SERVICES ON
THE M3A4 SMOKE GENERATOR
As soon as the smoke mission is completed, the smoke generator operator will stop the smoke
generator and perform after-operation services so that the generator will be ready for the next mission.
To stop the smoke generator, proceed as follows (numbers refer to Figure 21):

Step 1. Close the oil-metering globe valve (1) by turning the handle clockwise.
Step 2. Open the drain cock (2) on the fog oil pump.
