LESSON 5
NORMALIZE DOSE RATES AND PROCESS NBC 4 (NUCLEAR)
REPORTS
Critical Task: 031-506-1053
OVERVIEW
LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this lesson you will learn to normalize dose rates and process NBC 4 (nuclear) reports.
TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
ACTION:
You will normalize dose rates and process NBC 4 (nuclear) reports.
CONDITION:
You will be given information about and illustrations of the procedures for
normalizing dose rates and processing NBC 4 (nuclear) report data.
STANDARD:
You will demonstrate competency of the task skills and knowledge by responding
to the multiple-choice test covering the procedures for normalizing dose rates and
processing NBC 4 (nuclear) reports.
REFERENCES:
The material contained in this lesson was derived from FM 3-3-1 and STP 3-
54B34-SM-TG.
INTRODUCTION
To process most NBC 4 (nuclear) reports, you must determine the normalizing factor (NF) and use it to
normalize the dose rate reading to a reference time. This procedure can also be accomplished by using a
nomogram or the ABC-M1A1 RADIAC calculator.
PART A: PROCESS NBC 4 (NUCLEAR) REPORTS
5-1. General. Processing the NBC 4 (nuclear) reports will lead to an accurate map overlay that will
denote the extent and amount of contamination. There are seven standard NBC 4 (nuclear) reports:
initial, contact, peak, special, series, summary, and verification. Process the reports as follows:
a. NBC 4 initial. Plot a point (+) on the overlay and plot the time next to the point.
b. NBC 4 contact. This is a reconnaissance report. Plot a point on the overlay and plot the actual
or normalized dose rate next to the point.
c. NBC 4 peak. Plot the normalized dose rate next to the point.
