GENERAL
The Troubleshooting Procedures for the M3A4 Smoke Generator subcourse is designed to teach the
student a description of the M3A4 smoke generator and operator preventive maintenance. The student
will also learn to troubleshoot the generator when the engine will not start, when smoke output is
insufficient, and when the engine overheats. The subcourse is presented in two lessons, each lesson
corresponding to a terminal learning objective as indicated below.
LESSON 1: Perform Technical Inspection on the M3A4 Smoke Generator
TASK: Perform technical inspection on the M3A4 smoke generator.
CONDITIONS: Given a description of the M3A4 smoke generator and information about and
illustrations of the checks to be made on the generator prior to organizational maintenance.
STANDARDS: Demonstrate competency of the task skills and knowledge by responding to the
multiple-choice test covering the description of the generator and the checks to be made on the generator
prior to organizational maintenance.

LESSON 2: Troubleshoot the M3A4 Smoke Generator
TASK: Troubleshoot the M3A4 smoke generator.

generator when the engine will not start, produces little or no smoke, or overheats.
STANDARDS: Demonstrate competency of the task skills and knowledge by responding to the
multiple-choice test covering the description of the smoke generator and troubleshooting procedures for
the generator when the engine will not start, produces little or no smoke, or overheats.
