The generator is a self-contained unit that uses a pulse jet engine and fog oil to produce smoke. The
unit consists of an engine, a fuel system, a fog oil system, a starting system, and a frame assembly. The
components of the smoke generator are mounted on a tubular-steel frame. The frame is provided with
retractable carrying handles, which permit the smoke generator to be carried from one location to
another by two men.
Components of the M3A4 Smoke Generator
The components of the M3A4 Smoke Generator are described below.
Engine. The engine system is the heart of the smoke generator. The pulse jet engine does four things.
Develops heat to vaporize the fog oil.
Develops thrust to force the vaporized fog oil into the atmosphere.
Develops suction to open the engine valve and draw successive fuel and air mixtures into the
Develops pressure to drive the fog-oil pump.
The engine system (Figure 2) consists of an engine head assembly, blanket, engine tube, engine tube
housing assembly, outer shell, cooling baffle assembly, front cover, inner and outer discharge baffles,
and a discharge cover assembly.
