LESSON 2
CALCULATE NUCLEAR WEAPONS YIELD
OVERVIEW
LESSON DESCRIPTION:
In this lesson you will learn to calculate nuclear weapons yield.
TERMINAL LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
ACTION:
Calculate nuclear weapons yield.
CONDITION:
Given information about and illustrations of the procedures
for estimating nuclear weapons yields using either the
nuclear yield nomograms or the Nuclear Yield Calculator,
M4A1.
STANDARD:
Demonstrate competency of the task skills and knowledge by
responding to the multiple-choice test covering the
procedures for estimating the yield of a nuclear weapon.
REFERENCES:

INTRODUCTION
To properly evaluate the effects of a nuclear attack and prepare plans
and warnings, you must be able to calculate the approximate yield of the
weapon used.
You will learn how to extract information from NBC 1
(Nuclear) Reports and, with the use of nomograms, calculate the estimated
yield of a nuclear weapon.
You also will learn how to use the M4A1
Nuclear Yield Calculator to determine the yield of a nuclear burst.
CALCULATE NUCLEAR WEAPONS YIELD
Estimation of the yield of a nuclear weapon can be a critical factor in
the decisions made by a commander. The estimated yield is based upon
nuclear burst data submitted by reporting units. The accuracy of nuclear
burst data will dictate the reliability of the yield estimate. Reporting
units may provide different elements of the nuclear burst data.
Therefore, several methods of yield estimation have been developed.
