INTRODUCTION
On the fast moving battlefield of today, commanders must be more
knowledgeable of the entire battlefield situation. The luxury of only
worrying about your own little sector has passed with the introduction of
a vast nuclear arsenal into the modern warfare machinery. Though a unit
is not directly involved in a nuclear attack, the unit may receive
fallout created by the attack at considerable distances from ground zero
or at some future time the unit may have to occupy or cross the
contaminated area.
To give the commander the knowledge required to
operate in a nuclear environment, the NBC reporting system has been
established.
This system consists of a series of nuclear reports
transmitted up and down the chain of command, designed to inform the
command of the hazards to be expected and that actually result from a
nuclear attack.
In this lesson, you will learn to process reports from observers and to
determine the estimated yield of the weapon and the approximate location
of ground zero (GZ). Ground zero is the
