INTRODUCTION
Radiological fallout may present a serious radiological hazard to units that remain in the contaminated
area. The efficient use of shelters, such as field emplacements, will provide the best protective measures
against nuclear radiation for troops in the field. If the shelter provides any appreciable amount of
protection, it will generally be advantageous to remain in the shelter and improve it rather than to
attempt to evacuate to an uncontaminated area. However, if the situation permits, and with approval of
higher headquarters, the commander may decide or be directed to move out of the radiologically
contaminated area. By evacuating the contaminated area at the optimum exit, the radiation dose to
personnel will be kept to a minimum under the circumstances.
