EXAMPLE PROBLEM: Personnel are to enter a fallout area at H + 3 and will remain in the area for 2
hours. The H + 1 dose rate reading for the area they will occupy was 70 cGyph. What total dose of
radiation will unprotected personnel receive?
Solution ■
Given: Te = H+3
Ts = 2 hours
R1 = 70 cGyph
Find:
D
Answer ■
28 cGy.
See Figure 2-1.
The total dose of radiation received by protected personnel is determined by multiplying the total
outside dose determined from the nomogram by the transmission factor of the shielding material. For
instance, if the personnel in the example problem above were occupying the area inside armored
personnel carriers, M113, the total dose would be computed by multiplying 28 cGy by 0.3 (TF for M113
APC). These personnel would then receive a total radiation dose of 8.4 cGy.
